I’m Susan Stephensen and work for ASU in Government Affairs. I serve on several but especially enjoy the opportunity I have to serve with Downtown Mesa Association and i.d.e.a Museum. I have 4 married children and 15 grandchildren. We’re a pretty musical family, love cooking, and visiting the Mouse House together!
2. What is your position on the board, and what do you do in your board position for Mesa Leadership?
I’m part of Curriculum, along with two other board members, we organize and facilitate the classes each month.
3. What attracted you to attend Mesa Leadership, Training, and Development?
I learned about it through our Chamber CEO, Sally Harrison. I absolutely loved every minute of being in the class, so much so that I just couldn’t stop….so I joined the board!
4. What class year did you graduate?
2020, aka Best. Class. Ever.
5. What was your class project?
We did an incredible facelift for Paz de Cristo, including paint, a security system, new landscaping, and a little extra money for their future needs. It has benefitted not only them but other businesses around them.
6. What leadership principle(s) did you learn from attending Mesa Leadership and still use in your leadership style?
Good leaders also make good followers, and I focused a lot of my personal growth on being a better follower.
7. What would you say if someone asked you about Mesa Leadership?
Do it! There is no better way to get involved in your community!
8. What is a good leader?
A good leader is the one who never wants to be the smartest person in the room. They surround themselves by smarter people so they can continue to learn and grow.
